After Christmas Feelings

Hey you guys!  How you doin?

I'm... recovering, I guess you could say.  A friend of mine mentioned that she is disturbed by the huge build-up to Christmas, only to have it end in one day.  Sure, we stretch it out and make Christmas Eve part of the holiday, but then it's over.  Add into that scenario the whole we-were-with-our-humongous-families-for-8-days-and-now-we're-by-ourselves-again, and you've got yourself one weird set of feelings.  Perhaps you've got something similar going on.

Luckily, if you're me, you've also got yourself a rad new pair of boots!

I'm not sure if I love them because they're awesome, or because they're a bit ugly, but I really just don't care.  I love them, I love them, and I don't care who knows it!  I love them so much, I went though the trouble of tugging them on at 34 1/2 weeks pregnant, which was no small feat.  And I did it several times that day.  I wanted to wear them today, but Handsome is back at work, and I didn't have anyone to pull them off for me.  Much as I love them (have I mentioned that I love them?) I do not want to sleep in them.

I've got more to share later, but I wanted to pop in and say (1) that I haven't had the baby yet, despite my 3-week blogging hiatus, and (2) that I hope you all had a very merry Christmas, and that your new year starts off right.  I'm planning to wear these boots to ring it in.  If I'm not sleeping by the time midnight rolls around.  As I've already said, they aren't for sleeping.

A Baby in Ma Belly: Week 32

So there's a baby.  In ma belly.  It mostly knocks around like a drunk, although there are definitely times when I'm pretty sure the kid is auditioning for Tremors.  Makes it a little hard to concentrate on finals, I'm telling ya.

Some of the best of Kevin Bacon you'd never want to see.

Also, this 33-week bell-lay is making it difficult to hunch over my computer trying to get ready what needs to be gotten ready for my dissertation proposal.  Babies & Grad school: they're not in love with each other.

All of that aside, here's a little baby update for you, a la' the style of my gal pal Alyx.

Small Town Love

So I participated in a chili cookoff the other weekend.

I'll spare you the suspense: I didn't win.

I'm not all that concerned, though.  I love my chili.  I didn't make anyone sick.  We're calling that a win.

In the middle of the cookoff, there was a Christmas parade.  It started like any other Christmas parade, assuming any other Christmas parade begins with the lead ambulance leaving the parade to go run a call.

My Favorite Tree

This year's tree might just be my favorite.  Every year's tree might be my favorite, but this one is going in the record books.  Seriously, the smell alone might have nominated it (it fills the whole floor).  But it is perfectly imperfect, it has gaps in all the wrong places, and I love it.

Even more, I love what is on it.  I talk about these every year, but Dante's Grandma has been making us ornaments every year, and that's what fills up these scraggly branches.  Sweet, handmade ornaments, like this bride one that I got when Dante & I were engaged.

And this one, the hand-beaded tree, which I believe was the first one I was given.

These ornaments are precious to me.  I mean, I value the ornaments that are paper that I taped to the first year's tree, but these ones are just something more.

Surviving December

It seems lately that every other blog post I read is about somebody having a handful of hectic days, the lovely mixed in with the chaos, and surviving it.  I thought you all should know, I'm surviving it too.  The lovely, the chaotic, the busy, the tired, the mess... it's wonderful and exhausting and, best of all, survivable.  I think it's something to do with this time of year, the mix of beauty and difficulty.  But always survivable.

This picture is from when we went out for Handsome's birthday dinner.
It was a great time.
As an aside: I lack the capability to wear a decorative scarf.
Totally can't pull it off.
Don't try and help either, I'm beyond even wanting to learn.

Believe you me, I'm going to need December to be survivable.  That wicked handsome husband of mine?  He's got his work cut out for him this month.  Hours upon hours of clinicals, rounding out an already full-to-the-brim schedule.  Oh, and all in the first 20 days of the month, since we're planning to tempt fate/trust the Almighty, whatever you want to call it, and drive 650 north when I'm 34 weeks pregnant.  And then 650 miles south when I'm 35 weeks.  Because that's how we roll.  We have to take my car, though, as the Hubs has decreed that I will not go into labor in his truck.  He will deposit me in the snow beside the road if he has to, but I will not give birth in his precious truck.  Maybe on the tailgate; that is still up for debate.

Oh, and speaking of my handsome husband... well, he's looking a little cartoonish these days.  See, the 'stache is back, much to my chagrin, and he looks... I won't scandalize you with an actual photo, but here's one that someone drew of him...

Printable Nursery Fun

Okay, listen.  I've never done stuff like this before.  I'm not a "printable" person.  I see them, they're cute, but I don't have a whole lot of access to good printer, and so I never think to print the printables I see.  See?  But I saw some really cute stuff in some nursery pictures, and I decided that perhaps it was time that I make some of my own.

And so I did.

Let me begin by saying that I love  It works fabulous, and there's about a gazillion different fonts available on there.  So that's pretty cool.  I start by saving a blank jpg in paint, and then upload that and go to town.  And here's what I've come up with, all a play on the whole "rocking the baby" thing!

a' la Andy Kim
Seriously, this song is every baby's favorite.
Try it out, and be amazed.

a' la Old Crow Medicine Show
One of my personal favorites.
It was Handsome's wake-up alarm for a while, but then I started hating the song by association.
And I really didn't want to hate this song.
It's my jam!

a' la Scorpions
You know, for all y'all classic rockers out there.
If you like them or whatever, you're more than welcome to download them and use them.  I don't know how to make it a printable for you, else I'd make it even easier ;)  They are scaled for 8x10 prints, but should be able to scale to print whatever size you need.  I printed them out, and they're nice and clear.  Later this week, I'm gonna have a true blue nursery/baby update for you.  But for now, I just wanted to share my most recent foray into making stuff.
